What happened

?

We see the setting in London, with the dilapidated door that will turn out to be Hyde's usual way into Jekyll's laboratory.

It introduces Mr Utterson, from whose point of view we will see much of the action.

Mr Utterson is taking his usual Sunday walk with his relative, Mr Enfield.

In a well-kept street, they see a battered door, which prompts Enfield to tell Utterson of a recent experience.

Enfield had seen a short man run into and trample over a little small girl who was 8-10 years old, late at night. He had shouted to stop the man and raise the alarm.
