Industry:

• Rapid growth - late 19th century more steel & iron than any other country
• 1914 - over half of Germans in industry
• BUT had low wages and poor living conditions
• Workers joined trade unions and socialist parties

Government:

• Kaiser had most of the power - head of government
• He appointed ministers to run the country & was commander of armed forces
• Men 25+ could vote for Reichstag - voted on laws, BUT no control over foreign policies or military & coudn't appoint or dismiss ministers

Socialists:

• Wanted power and wealth to be shared equally
