Alveoles

  • small hollows 5-50cm in size occuring in clusters
  • formed by crystal growth and hydration as well as case hardening (when hard layer of salt covers rock, when saline water is drawn to the surface)

Pedestal rock

  • isolated pillar of rock with an indented profile
  • formed with salt crystal growth and wind erosion
  • high saline water is drawn to the surface and the water evaporates
  • this increases the resistance of the rock, whereas below…
