wave:an oscillation that transfers energy without transferring any matter
transverse waves:
in transverse waves the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer of the wave
eg light ripples on water
longitudinal waves:
in longitudinal waves the oscillations are parallel to the direction of energy transfer of the wave
eg sound springs when you push the end
when waves travel through a medium the particles of the medium oscillate and transfer energy between each other but overall the particles stay in the same place
only energy transferred
features of waves:
the amplitude of a wave is the maximum displacement of a point on the wave from its undisturbed position
the wavelength is the distance between the same point on two adjacent waves
frequency is the number of complete waves passing a certain point per second
frequency is measured in hertz Hz
1 hertz is 1 wave per second
the period of a wave is the amount of time between one crest passing a point and the next crest passing the same point
period=1/frequency
wave speed:
v=f x wavelength(Lambda)
the wave speed is the speed at which energy is being transferred
measuring the speed of sound in air:
method:
using a a signal generator and speaker put 2 microphones next to the speaker
the detected wave at each microphone are…
