Waves

?

All waves are either longitundal or transverse. In transervrse waves the vibrations are perpendicular, but in longitundinal waves they are parallel. Sound and shock waves are longitundinal.

WAVES TRANSFER ENERGY FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER WITHOUT TRANSFERRING ANY MATTER. When waves travel, the particles oscillate and transfer energy but they do not move.

Waves have amplitude, frquency and wavelength.

The Amplitude - the maxium displacement of a point on a wave from it's undisturbed position.

The Wavelength - the distance between the same point on two different waves.

The Freqency - the amount of whole waves that pass through in a second. Measured in Hurtz (Hz)

The Period - the amount of time it takes a full cycle of the wave to pass a point.

All waves can be transmtted, absorbed or reflected.  When a wave hits a boundary between 2 different materials, 3 things happen; the waves are abosrbed, this transfers energy to the materials energy store. The waves are transmitted, and carry
