Water Quality
Water is essential for life, but it must be free of poisonous salts (e.g. phosphates and nitrates) and harmful microorganisms which can cause diseases like cholera and dysentery
Most our drinking water comes from reservoirs, water flows in reservoirs from rivers and groundwater, water companies choose to build reservoirs where there's a good supply of clean water
Water treatment:
- Water passes through a mesh screen to remove big bits like twigs
- Treated with ozone or chlorine to kill microorganisms
- Chemicals added to make solids and microorganisms stick together and fall to the bottom, sometimes iron is added to remove dissolved phosphates and bacteria are used to remove nitrates
- Filtered through gravel beds to remove all solids
- Nasty…
