Types of Volcano
There are two main types of volcano;
- Constructive plate boundaries -> magma rises to fill the gap as two plate pull apart ->relatively gentle eruptions, e.g. Iceland
Volcanoes are classified as active if they have erupted recently, dormant if they have erupted in the last 2000 years and extinct if they have not erupted for many thousands of years.
- Destructive plate boundaries-> oceanic crust is melted as it is subdeucted -> magma forces it's way upwards through the continental crust to erupt as explosive volcanoes ,e.g. Mount St. Helens, USA.
