Volcanoes and Super-volcanoes

?
  • Volcanoes are found at destructive and constructive plate margins
    • At destructive plate margins, the oceanic plate submerges beneath the continental plate as it is more dense
      • The oceanic plate moves down into the mantle - where it is melted and destroyed
      • A pool of magma forms
      • The magma rises through cracks in the crust called vents
      • The magma erupts onto the surface, cooling to form a volcano
    • At constructive plate margins the magma rises up into the gap created by the plates moving apart, forming a volcano
  • Some volcanoes form over parts of the mantle that are really hot, they are called hotspots
    • An example of this is in Hawai
  • There are 3 different kinds of volcano:
    • Composite Volcanoes - eg. Mount Fuji in Japan
      • Made up of ash and lava that's erupted…
