protein synthesis

There are two stages

firstly 1. transcription

secondly 2. translation (you can remember it as L for long as this is the longer stage)

Transcription - takes place in the nucleus

  • a section of DNA is unwound & the 2 strands seperate
  • there are free bases already in the nucleus
  • free complimentary bases pair (the ones that can join together) with the open ones on any one side (when two strands are unwound). *the base pairs that can pair are the same as in DNA (A-T / G-C) except that T is replaced by U so it becomes A-U pair, G-C.
  • the free bases are joined to make a new strand. This is called complementary mRNA.
