The belief that it's no more acceptable for animals to be captive in laboratory cages etc than for humans to be. Importantly, it's the belief that all animals have the right to food,water, veterinary treatment, and the ability to express normal behaviours.

Importance of Consent

Accepting that animals have rights would mean that, in order to conduct experiments, animals must have given consent, much like humans would have to give their informed consent. To put this in practice would be to bring an end to the of animals in medical research altogether
