Functional grouping - is when activities in an organisation are grouped into departments based on similar skills, expertise and resources used. This type of grouping is most commonly used in 

- marketing, human resource management, finance, operations, reserach and developement,          administration.

Product/service grouping - Here the grouping of activities is based around a particular product or service and is usually described as a division. Each devision is a self contained unit. In most cases, organisations using this type of structure are very large, producing a variety of products for different markets.
