Haiyan is in the Phillipines which is about 15 degrees North of the equator.

It's an island in the Pacific ocean around 4000km (2500 miles) North of Australia and about 800 km away from Indonesia and Malaysia.

Anywhere between 0-15 degrees North or South of the Equator is perfect area for tropical storms, because the water is warm enough and the winds are strong enough to pick up the water and make a vicious storm.

Over 6300 people died during this category 5 storm with wind speeds upwards of 145 miles per hour and cost over $5 billion in damages to building and infrastructure.
