Mary Ainsworth - The Strange Situation

Observed infants aged 1 year to 18 months through video cameras in a (LAB) playroom with their mothers. 

Whilst the sits and the child plays a stranger enters the room and briefly talks with the mother.

The stranger then approaches and tries to interact with the infant.

Mother leaves the room, stranger comforms infant.Mother returns, stanger leaves. Mother leaves again, infant briefly alone, stanger returns, mother returns, stranger leaves.

Through this study Ainsworth was able to identify 3 types of attachment:
