Episodic memory: Exclusive/declarative. Knowing that. Concerned with personal experiences like your first day of school. You may recall the time and place, who was there, and the context of the event like what happened before and after, and you may recall associated emotions. Thus the three elements are: specific details, context and emotion.

Semantic memory: Exclusive/declarative: Shared memories for facts and knowledge e.g. the function of objects or social customs. They may also relate the abstract concepts like maths. They start as episodic memories as we acquire knowledge from personal experience, and they gradually transition into a semantic memory as we stop assocating it with particular events.

Procedural memory: Implicit. Memory for how to do things like ride a bike. They are acquired through repitition and practice and we are less aware of them because they are automatic. When you think about a procedural memory it usually prevents you from acting it out as attention to the procedure disrupts the well-learned automatic performance. Its important they're automatic so we can focus attention of other tasks whilst performing these tasks.

Evidence from brain scans - Shows different areas of the brain when different types of LTM are active. Episodic is associated with the hippocampus and parts of the temporal lobe and frontal lobe. Different elements of an event may be distributed to other areas of the brain but they are all joined by the hippocampus to form an episode. Semantic…
