Types of experiment

Laboratory experiments

  • Conducted in highly controlled environments
  • Not always a lab- e.g. could be a highly controlled classroom

+High control over extraneous variables-researcher can clearly establish cause and effect (high internal validity)

+Replication is more possible because of the high level of control

-May lack generalisability, the environment may be artificial and not like every day life. In an unfamiliar context ppts may behave in unusual ways so beh can't be generalised beyond the research setting (low external validity)

-Ppts usually aware they are being tested in a lab and may lead to demand charcteristics

-The tasks ppts have to carry out may not represent real-life experience, low mundane realism

Field experiments

  • In field experiments the IV is manipulated in a natural, more everyday setting
