Preparation:
- Built levees- flood defences ( like a wall) Unfortunately had been broken because it was to strong enough to withstand a hurricane of category 3
- The USA has strong monitoring systems- used to predict if a hurricane will hit (e.g using satellite images of the Atlantic)-people were warned
- 70-805 of New Orleans residents were evacuated before Hurricane reached land.
- Mississipi and Louisiana declares states of emergency on 26th August- set up control centers and stockpiled supplies
