3 factors that affect the need for transport systems:

  • size

once an animal has several layers of cells, they outer layers will take up all substances diffused into the animal and will not reach deep into the body

  • surface area - volume ratio

small animals = large surface area vs volume.  The ratio can be affected by shape.  volume increases as
