Step up transformers - step up voltage, have more turns on secondary coil than primary
Step down transformers - step down voltage, more turns on primary coil than secondary
Work by electromagnetic induction:
- Primary coil produces a magnetic field which stays within the iron core, meaning nearly all of it passes through to secondary coil
- Because AC in the primary coil, the field in the iron core is constantly changing direction - changing magnetic field
- This is felt by secondary coil
- Induces an alternating voltage in secondary coil (same frequency as in primary) - electromagnetic induction
