Transcription produces an mRNA strand which is complementary to a section of DNA - a gene.


1) DNA helicase separates the 2 DNA strands by breaking the hydrogen bonds between the bases.  This occurs for a short section DNA at any one time.

2) RNA nucleotides with complementary bases will line up along the exposed DNA bases on one strand of the DNA - the template
