- Evidence of early life forms comes from fossils
- Fossils are the 'remains' of organisms from hundereds of thousands of years ago, which are found in rocks
- Fossils may be formaed in vaious ways:
- from parts of organisms that haven't decayed because one or more of the conditions needed for decay were absent
- when parts if an organism are replaced by other materials as they decay
- as preserved traces of organisms
- eg footprints, burrows and rootlet traces
- Many early life forms were soft-bodied, meaning that they have left very few traces behind
