- Respiration in cells can take place in order to release energy:
- Aerobically- with oxygen
- Anaerobically- without oxygen
- During aerobic respiration chemical reactions occur that use glucose and oxygen to release energy. The equation for it is:
- C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O or glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water
- Aerobic respiration takes place continuously in both plants and animals
- Most of the reactions in aerobic respiration take place in the mitochondria
- The energy that is released in respiration may be used by the organism in a variety of different ways:
- To build larger molecules from smaller ones in animals
