THE ALKALI METALS

  • The alkali metals are the elements of Group 1 in the periodic table. 
  • The alkali metals are the most electropositive of the elements. That means that they are the most ready to form positive ions. They are the most reactive metals because of this. 
  • So, the reactivity of the alkali metals increases with atomic number. To put it another way, the larger the atom, the more reactive the alkali metal. 

REACTIONS OF ALKALI METALS

  • Reactions of alkali metals:
    • They react with oxygen to form their oxides.
    • Sodium and potassium burn in air.
    • They react with water to form hydroxides and release hydrogen. 
    • They react explosively with acids to form a salt and release hydrogen.
