Segregation and Racism Quotes

Racism Quotes:

  • "He despises Negroes, won't have one near him" - Atticus Finch (Page 170 of the version published by Vintage 2005. First page of Chapter 16)
  • "The black people surged upstairs" - Scout (as Narrator) This quote is taken from when Scout, Jem and Dill are going to see the trial of Tom Robinson. The seating is segregated, so all the coloured folk would sit in the balconys, whilst the whites would be seated on the floor. Remember also that there where no blacks in the jury.
  • "Cry about the hell white people give coloured folks" - Mr Raymond. Mr Raymond says this to Scout, Jem and Dill when he sees the children coming out of the court as Dill is very upset by the way Tom is being treated. He, too, knows how wrong racism is.
  • "I seen that black ****** yonder ruttin on my daughter" - Mr Ewell. This was said
