STAVE 1 – Scrooge talking to the
charitable gentlemen
I wish to be left alone
I don’t make merry myself at Christmas
and I can’t afford to make idle people merry’
If they’d rather die
they had better do it
and decrease the surplus population’
STAVE 2 – Scrooge sees himself as a lonely child
left at school in the past
They went, the Ghost and Scrooge
across the hall to a door at the back of the house
It opened before them
and disclosed a long, bare, melancholy room
a lonely boy was reading near a feeble fire
and Scrooge sat down upon a form,
and wept to…
