RUSSIA D3 TIMELINE OF EVENTS

 

·        1815 - Population of Russia 45 million

·        1855 - Alexander II as Tsar

·        1856, February - Russia loses Crimean War

·        1861 - Emancipation of the serfs (but still indebted)

·        1863/73/ - Military Reforms (better officer training, abolition of corporal punishment and changes to conscription)

·        1864  -    Zemstva established (weighted to favour upper class)

-          Judicial Reforms (Justices of the Peace with greater independence and Trial by jury in major criminal cases)

-          University affair independence and improved access to education

·        1865 - Censorship lessened (no publication submission checks, but freedom of expression still limited)

·        1876 - Land and Liberty (Populist group) formed

·        1879 - Split into People’s Will and Black Reparation

·        1881  -    March 1st - Alexander II assassinated by ‘People’s Will’

-          Alexander III as Tsar

-          Statute of State Security (prohibit 12+ gatherings, prosecute for political crimes, emergency police rule powers, special courts outside legal system, close schools, unis and papers)

·        1882 - Peasants’ Land Bank formed

·        1886/7 - Vyshnegradsky as Finance Minister (exports over eating)

·        1889 - JPs abolished to become Land Captains

·        1890 - Control more centralised (independence of Zemstva reduced and number of voters cut – only 0.7% in Moscow and St. P)

·        1891/2 - Famine (V. fired)

·        1892 - Sergei Witte as Finance Minister (Trans-Siberian Railway, raised peasant taxes, huge loans secured, foreign investment expertise)

·        1894 - Nicholas II as Tsar (father died unexpectedly)

·        1897 - Witte set up Gold Standard for rouble

·        1898  -    Marxists formed Social Democratic Labour Party

-          1st Congress broken up

·        1902  -    Plehve as Minister of the Interior

-          Socialist Revolutionary Party founded (violence inherited from PW)

·        1903 - Witte fired (enemies persuaded NII)

-          SDs split at 2nd Congress into Bolsheviks (Lenin) and Mensheviks (Martov)

·        1904  -     Plehve assassinated

-          Union of Liberation banquet

·        1905  -  January 9th, Bloody Sunday (peaceful march to Winter Palace

-          June 14th, Potemkin Mutiny (naval crew
