Link To Assumptions
The assumption is that mentally-distorted behaviour has a physical, biological cause, such as an imbalance of neurotransmitters, and this can be treated with drugs.
Chemotherapy is another word for drug treatment. Psychoactive drugs are used to treat mental disorders.
Psychoactive drugs were first develpoped in the 1950's and revolutionised the treatment of mental disorder because many of the symptoms of serious disorders (such as hallucinations or crippling depression) can be controlled, enabling patients to conduct relatively normal lives.
Examples Of Different Kinds Of Chemotherapy
1. Antipsychotic drugs treat psychotic mental disorders such as schizophrenia which are associated with high levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine.
- Conventional antipsychotics (e.e. chlorpromazine) block the action of dopamine in the brain by binding to dopamine receptors.
