Petyt's Bradford Study:

Higher class = more standard dialect.

Lower class = more regional dialect.

Only 12% of upper/middle class used H-Dropping.

93% of lower/working class used H-Dropping.

People who naturally moved up social class automatically became more standard & dropped regional features, such as H-Dropping.

People who consciously moved up socially made a deliberate effort to change their dialect, resulting in hypercorrection.

Those who did hypercorrection often used /u/ & /uh/ in the wrong form (e.g. used /uh/ in 'cushion').
