A theme is just an idea or concept that comes up in a play. Getting to grips with themes is all about spotting how different bits of a play deal with the same ideas.

Work out what the question is Asking.

Here's a theme question for you to think about.

Q. How are different attitudes to revenge shown in The Tempest? Refer to Act 3 Scene 2 and Act 5 Scene 1.

  • You could rephrase this as: "Some of the characters in The Tempest want revenge on others. Why is this and how do they each try to get revenge?"

Don't panic if this question seems complicated. Read if carefully, and you'll realise it's actually pretty simple.
