Courts Decide if a suspect is guilty or innocent

Nearly all criminal cases are dealt with in magistrates' court

Magistrates are part-time and un-paid

Disticts judges are experienced lawyers and work on complicated cases but work alone

If the defendant pleads guilty the lawyer tries to get a light sentence for the defendant - the magistrates decide what the punishment is (sentencing)
