The UK is a representative democracy 

Representative Democracy - Citizens elect representatives to make decisions that affect everyone

Since 1969, everyone over 18 can vote and this is sometimes called universal suffrage

Universal - everyone's treated the same

Suffrage - the right to vote 

In the 19th and 20th century groups campaigned to vote

The protests reformed the electoral system
