Dickens highlights the importance of family

Ghost of Christmas Past - children "running out into the snow" to greet "sisters, brothers, cousins, uncles, aunts", the "cheerful company" of a miner's family.

The Cratchit Family - symbolic of a perfect family. They're close and enjoy talking and affectionally teasing each other. Shown as loyal and supportive when they unite in their grief over Tiny Tim's death.

Dickens emphaises that theres nothing special about them ("nothing of high nark") but their family  love strengthens them and makes them happy.

Family Life is shown to be full of happiness

Fred's Family - Fred's laughter is "irresistbly contagious". His wife "laughed as heartily as he" and their friends "roared out, lustily".

Belle's Family - have a playful family. Belle and her daughter laugh "heartily" and Dickens says the family is full of "joy, and gratitude and ecstacy"

At first Scrooge doesn't see the point in family

Scrooge laughs at Fred when he says he got married because he fell in love. Scrooge then says that love is the "one thing in the world more ridiculous than a merry Christmas".

Scrooge contrasts with the other characters as he does not see
