Theme 3

?

Poverty and social responsibility:

  • Scrooge is apathetic torwards the poor.
  • Believes that his taxes pay for the prisons/workhouses so he doesnt't understand the need to donate to charity. He suggests that if the poor would rather die "they had better do it" and "decrease the surplus population"
  • Scrooges view lead him to the exploitation of characters like Bob Cratchit- he makes Bob work for low pay in freezing conditions.
  • Belle explains that scrooge lives in a fear of poverty. Scrooge even says "there is nothing on which it is so hard as poverty" This makes Scrooge's attitude to the poor(chapter 1) even worse. Scrooge knows that poverty is awful but his fear has caused him to act selfishly towars those in need.
  • Ghost of christmas present- reveals Ignorance and Want- children who are described as "horrible monsters". This suggest povertys problems come from a product of scoiety's neglect of the poor.
  • Scrooge's ignorance will eventually lead to the "doom" of society. To avoid this Dicken's is saying how society must adress the lack of education recieved by the poor.
  • Tiny tim- clear link with poverty and death as he is only saved…
