The Diktat

  • On 11 November 1918, the Kaiser was abdicated
  • Matthias Erzberger, representing the new German government, agreed to sign up to a peace treaty
  • The Germans were given a total of 15 days to sign up to the treaty, which later became known as the Treaty of Versailles
  • The treaty was a diktat- which means that it is an agreement forced on someone
  • Because of the economic turmoil, political crisis and the military crackdown, they had to accept
  • On 28th June 1919, the German delegation signed the Treaty of Versailles
