The Conservatives 1964 – 70

·         Edward Heath was the first Conservative elected by the party MPs in 1965

·         from a grammar school and similar background to Wilson

·         Heath beat Enoch Powell

·         He had come to prominence by leading the negotiations to gain UK entry into the EEC under Macmillan

·         Unlike Wilson he seemed ill at ease in public and was not a great speaker in the House of Commons

·         He was sympathetic
