Causes:

  • Thasos sought to withdraw itself from the Delian league when the Athenians attempted to seize control over gold mines placed in Thasian mainland.
  • The Athenians argued that they were acting on behalf of a smaller state, protecting them from Thasian rule.

The conflict:

  • An initial battle took place which the Athenians won, and this led to the Athenians beseiging Thasos.
  • This seige lasted two years
  • Thasos were motivated to hold on when Sparta
