Causes:
- Thasos sought to withdraw itself from the Delian league when the Athenians attempted to seize control over gold mines placed in Thasian mainland.
- The Athenians argued that they were acting on behalf of a smaller state, protecting them from Thasian rule.
The conflict:
- An initial battle took place which the Athenians won, and this led to the Athenians beseiging Thasos.
