After WW2

  • Korea was divided by Japan, who had oppressed the Korean population
  • Allies defeated Japan, Korea became independent. 
  • 1945- US and the USSR agreed to a temp. divide of the country along the 38th parallel, USSR controlling the north, US controlling the south both under different ideologies - USSR communist, US capitalist democracy
  • split into two Koreas- Republic of Korea -S- led by Syngman Rhee and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea- N- let by communist Kim Il Sun
