  • Korea wasn't well known pre-June 1950 as it was of little interest to Western government. It's a peninsula jutting out from Asia into the Pacific Ocean, however it was surrounded by China, Japan and Russia. 
  • From 1895 and the next forty years, Korea was under Japanese rule, forcing some of the Korean people into exile. During this time, both Dr. Syngman Rhee and Kim Il Song left Korea and later returned to become powerful political leaders. 
  • Syngman Rhee  was a Christian who spoke English and had been sent
