The Rebecca riots

Was from 1839-1943

They were called 'Rebecca and her Daughters' as a Biblical Reference for they dressed in womens clothes to hide their identities.


The aim was to remove the tollgates and turnpikes which cost the farmers a vast sum.

As they also had to pay tithes to a church that they were not a member of. They felt that nobody was on their side-everyone in power was English not Welsh and they resented the gate owners due to the belief that the tithes they paid were not…
