panathenaia= more important festival of the religious year

celebrates Athene's birthday

chance for Athenians to come together and worship Athene

Athene was the protecter of the city

every 4 years was the great panathenaia

all Athenian's celebrated except slaves

the great panathenaia had a wider range of activities (such as sports) and was 3-4 days longer 

THE PROCESSION

28th July

build up began on the previous evening and lasted through the night

the grand procession included : animal sacrifices and the presentation of the peplos (new robe for Athene)
