Evidence for strong support for the Catholic church

  • It was the sole Christian religion in Western Europe
  • It was a focal point in the community
  • People believed that to die in a state of sin meant that you had eternal damnation, so they went to Church to be purged
  • About 50% of parish churches were remodelled from money of citizens: bequeaths in wills and monetary donations
  • Saints were adopted by communities to protect them from misfortune and death
