7.2 The impact of the PESSCL strategy

What is PESSCL?

Introduced in 2003 with a specified target to ‘ increase the percentage of schoolchildren who spend a minimum of two hours a week on high-quality PE and school sport within and beyond the curriculum to 75% by 2006 and 85% by 2008.’

Immediate aim beyond this was ensure that by 2010 all children, aged from 5 to 16 years, would be offered at least four hours of sport every week, made up of:

  • at least two hours of high-quality PE and sport at school delivered totally within the curriculum.
  • Additional two more or more hours beyond the school day, range of school, community and club providers.
