The Haber Process

This is an important industrila process. It produces ammonia (NH3) to make fertilisers

N2 (g) + 3H2 (G) <=======> 2NH3 (g)   (+HEAT)

  • The nitrogen is obtained from the air
  • Hydrogen gas is from sources such as natural gas or cude oil

The reaction is a reversible reaction so a compromise is made with the conditions:

Industrial Conditions:

  • Pressure - 200 atmosphere
  • Temperature - 450 degrees
  • Catalyst - Iron

The forward reaction is exothermic so heat is given out, so increasing the temperature would move the equilibrium the wrong way, from ammonia to the hydrogen and nitrogen.
