January 1519, the Emperor Maximilian died and Charles I of Spain became HRE. He was a big rival of Francis so Wolsey tried to ensure Henry remained in the middle, acting as the arbiter of peace, knowing that both wished for him to side with them. It soon became clear that Charles was going to get more people in Europe to support him and soon it looked like France was up against HRE and all its allies. This placed England in quite a strong, if rather precarious, position and it was for Wolsey to decide who he should persuade Henry to "side with". He decided that continuing the established links…
