Mining in Brazil:
A variety of minerals are extracted from the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil
1) The Carajas iron ore mining project uses wood from the forest to power its pig iron plants-> annual deforestation of 6100 km2
2) Mercury is used in gold mining. The mercury is very toxic and is found in high concentration in fish. 90% of the fish caught in the gold mining region surrounding the River Tapajos is contaminated with mercury. Eaten-> causes cancer+ high miscarriage rates among the trubespeople.
3) In the state of Roraima- conflicts between gold prospectors+ the indigenous Yanomamo Indians.
