The Drainage Basin

  • A drainage basin or catchment area is an area of land drained by a river and its tributaries.
  • Its boundary which is always an area of higher land otherwise known as a Watershed.
  • The Mississipi's drainage basin covers over 1/3 of the USA.

Key Words

Precipitation-This includes rainfall, snow, sleet and hail.

Interception by vegetation- When it rains, most water are intercepted by trees and plants. For example if the rains falls as a short, light shower then little water will reach the ground and the water will be stored on leaves and then lost through evaporation.
