The Bay of Pigs incident - 1961

Background information:

  • Cuba's leader, Fulgencio Batista was a dictator. He was seen as a symbol of American control in Cuba for many Cubans. He was overthrown in 1959 by Fidel Castro.
  • After Castro took over Cuba, their connections with the United States declined. In 1960, Castro took over U.S. oil refineries in Cuba.
  • In response to this, the USA stopped buying Cuban sugar. Castro retaliated by taking over all of the USA's businesses in Cuba.
