The Patimokkha were not just preserved by oral tradition through chanting the specific rules in the format that they exist today; before this, they were each associated with an origin story in order to exemplify the rule in practice
As a rule, throughout Theravada Buddhism, the Patimokkha are recited before the assembled community of the fully ordained on all full moon days (Uposatha Day) and new moon days
