The Treaty of Versailles

After Armistice was signes in November 1918, the Allies started making a peace treaty. This was to punish Germany for the war.

Many people thought the treaty wouldn't be to harsh becuase:

Germans believed they were forced into the war = other countries should take responsibility
Allies may give new German government a chance to restore stability
USA President, Woodrow Wilson, didn't want a harsh treaty = lead to German bitterness and want for revenge. 'Fourteen Points', made by president, was what Germans thought treaty would be based on
Kaiser has fled and there was a new government in German = Allies can't blame actions on the previous decisions of Kaiser
