The Solent
Location: South of England, separating the Isle of Wight and England
Plants: Halophytes (salt-tolerant), i.e. glasswort, cord grass
Animals: Birds, i.e. redshank, geese, Terrestrial animals, Fish, Crustaceans
Physical Factors
Microclimate - high rainfall which washes out salt; low rainfall and high temperatures inrease it. Must be able to withstand flood and drought.
Soil - gleys (waterlogged clays and silts), so many plants have shallow roots.
Relief - very low and flat so there is poor drainage and creeks and pools form salt-pans. Ever-shifting mud, so some plants, i.e. cord grass, have deep roots.
Drainage - twice-daily tides and seasonal differences, so halophytic. Animals seal their burrows or regulate body fluids.
Succession - result of halophytic pioneers binding the mud and adding nutrients when they die. Organic matter gradually raises height, so drier, less resistant species colonise.
Human Influences
Industry - marshes reclaimed for industrial sites…
