The Sardar Sarovar Dam will irrigate 1.8 million hectares of farmland in th driest parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan and madhya. It was originally designed to be 80m high to provide 3.5 billion litres of drinking water a day and 1450 megawatts of hydroelectric power. By 2008, the Indian Government had built over 4500 dams - 14 of which are super dams. Now the Narmada is being tackled with 3000 dams but it will take over 100 years to complete.
